As a first step in understanding opportunities and challenges across the R2I2 network, the RNO hosted one-on-one meetings with each of the project teams. These meetings revealed shared interests around community engagement, data translation and accessibility, and strategically planning for future opportunities to support the long-term implementation and sustainability of the resilience innovations the teams are developing. The RNO established four network engagement groups for R2I2 project teams to learn from one another and build capacity to address these challenges and opportunities in their work. These groups meet via Zoom about every 6 weeks for dialogue around priority topics that help to advance their work and our collective understanding of best practices in co-designed resilience strategies.
For more information about any of the engagement groups or to be added to the meeting invitation for upcoming convenings, contact Natalie Bennett at nbenn@umn.edu.
Priority topics:
Managing stakeholder fatigue and limited partner capacities
Navigating differing stakeholder values, priorities, cultures, expectations and timelines
Best practices for identifying and partnering with new stakeholder groups
Navigating compensation for partners
Project metrics or measurements related to community engagement
Work that leads to impact beyond the funded project
The RNO is also coordinating with the Community Partnerships group on two knowledge co-production research activies to 1) create an internal database of community partnership and stakeholder engagement approaches and activies for the network and 2) better understand best practices in community engagement from R2I2 partner perspectives.
Next Meeting - Monday, October 26, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. CT
Priority topics:
Best practices for science translation and communication through online tools and resources
Data accessibility, sharing, and translation co-designed in collaboration with users
Data integration from various platforms and data types
Long-term storage strategies beyond data repositories (i.e., tools for end users)
The Data Translation and Accessibility group is also supporting the development of the R2I2 Data Discovery Hub designed to to connect themes, methodologies, and emerging patterns across all 19 project teams. The Hub is an online clearinghouse that allows users to learn about the datasets teams are creating and using, linking directly to data stored on trusted, field-specific FAIR repositories.
Next Meeting - Tuesday, November 17, 2:00 - 2:50 p.m. CT
Priority topics:
Strategic funding roadmaps for long-term research agendas
Exploring different funding mechanisms
Evolving structures of the funding landscape
Bridging collaborations across the R2I2 network
Changing priorities and structures of federal science organizations
In addition to the engagement group meetings, the RNO is working with the Strategic Engagement Core in the UMN Research Development Office to offer learning opportunities and individual consultations with R2I2 project teams to support long-term research and programmatic planning.
Next Meeting - TBD
Priority topics:
Skill-building (community-based research, science communication, securing funding, AI use in research)
Professional development (exploring careers outside of academia, getting a job out of graduate school)
Peer learning and knowledge sharing
